Camping

Fly camping or ‘sleep outs’ are one of the most memorable nights you will spend sleeping in the African bush and provide a wonderful excuse to get back to basics.

Often combined with a walking safari, or a 3 or 4 night stay in a lodge, a fly camp is set up in a remote part of the reserve or concession some distance away from the main lodge / camp and offers you the opportunity to get out and experience a different area.

Typically a one night stay, you venture out in the afternoon, and either take a short game drive or a guided walk ending up at your fly camp. A skeleton team of staff would have gone ahead and set it up in advance of your arrival. In kenya, we can also arrange for you go by horse or camel if you prefer.

Depending on the particular set up, fly camps come in many guises from simple roll mats laid around a central camp fire, to sleeping under A-frame mosquito nets or in a simple dome tent with basic washing facilities provided. The common denominator is they all offer a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with the wilderness around you. A tasty dinner is cooked in front of you on the open camp fire, and the evening spent under the stars, listening to the night sounds of the surrounding bush. The following morning,

you wake up with the African dawn and the delicious smell of freshly brewed coffee. Again, depending on the set up, you will either enjoy breakfast in the bush or return back to the luxury of your lodge for hot showers and a delicious cooked breakfast.

Who would this suit?
Fly camping is a wild, raw and thrilling experience and often the highlight of a safari. In addition, it is safe and you are accompanied by your guide at all times. It suits adventurous types and those that don’t mind doing without their comforts for a night.

Where?
If this appeals to you and you would like us to weave this into your safari experience, then areas such as northern Kenya, the Selous and Ruaha in southern Tanzania and the Luangwa Valley in Zambia all lend themselves well to this kind of experience.
